Dubai’s Burj Khalifa looks set to be dethroned from the title of the Worlds tallest building bySaudi Arabia’s “Jeddah Tower”, which has secured funding of $US1.2 Billion to complete the cloud piercing final phase of its construction.
The Worlds Tallest Building
Once this final phase is completed, the Jeddah Tower will claim the coveted title of the Worlds tallest building with a staggering height of 1000 Metres (3,280 Feet)!
Also known as the “Kingdom Tower”, it will also claim the title of having the highest observation deck on the planet. It is also set to include offices, a 200-room Four Seasons Hotel, 121 serviced apartments and 360 residential apartments. Current construction is up to the 26th floor. It will have 200 levels when completed. It is set to have spectacular views from its location in Obhur on the Red Sea.
The tower’s design, by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, was inspired by the “folded fronds of young desert plant growth”. A popular sight in the oil-rich deserts of Saudi Arabia. Each of the tower’s three sides will feature a series of notches that create pockets of shadow that shield areas of the building from the sun, while providing outdoor terraces with uninterrupted views of Jeddah and the Red Sea.
When the Jeddah Tower is finally completed, we would have come a long way in a relatively short time when it comes to the title holder of the Worlds tallest building. Toronto’s CN Tower, at 353 metres, high held this record when it was completed back in the mid-seventies. 1976 to be precise. Its official title was the “tallest free-standing structure in the World”. The CN Tower would look like a scrawny little brother when placed next to the Jeddah Tower upon its completion! Proving even more how far engineering has come since, especially in oil-rich Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar.
